MEDIA RELEASE 15 March 2012

The Greens NSW spokesperson on mining Jeremy Buckingham claimed today that the National Party had failed country NSW by voting against the Coal Seam Gas Moratorium Bill, after the vote on the bill in the NSW Upper House failed 16 ayes, 19 noes.

The Coal Seam Gas Moratorium bill would have imposed a 12 month moratorium on the industry across NSW.

“The Parliament has failed the people of NSW by rejecting this bill.  A Galaxy Poll in August 2011 showed 74% of NSW residents support a moratorium on coal seam gas, with only 17% opposed,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.

“Despite the vote, the community has not granted this industry a social licence.  It is likely they will now take matters into their own hands and apply a community moratorium through community blockades and campaigning.

“The National Party MPs have utterly failed to live up to their pre-election promises to protect country NSW from the coal seam gas industry.  They are failing country NSW.

“The government’s Strategic Regional Land Use Policy provides a gateway to mining on land identified as the most strategic agricultural land.  The Nationals have opened the gate to coal seam gas rather than locked the gate as their constituency is demanding.

“The Shooters and Fishers Party and Christian Democrats used the current Parliamentary Inquiry on Coal Seam Gas as an excuse not to state their position on a moratorium. This is excuse does not hold up to scrutiny. Now is the time for a moratorium while there remains so much uncertainty about the impacts of this industry”

thanks to the 16 voters who supported the moratorium. let’s keep fighting to protect our water, our culture, our future - it ain’t over yet!

given the overwhelming community opposition (all communities everywhere, all sorts of people from all walks of life) to CSG and its impacts, those members that voted against the moratorium are clearly NOT representing their electorates. shame on them.
