About Jeremy

Jeremy Buckingham is an independent member of the NSW Legislative Council and holds the key portfolio responsibilities of Resources, Energy and Industry, Primary Industries and Agriculture, Water, Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service, Upper Mid North Coast and Western NSW.Jeremy1

Jeremy famously set on fire gas bubbling through the Condamine River, to demonstrate the dangers of coal seam gas extraction. He campaigns to protect land, water and the climate from fossil fuels, for a quick transition to clean renewable energy and for sustainable agriculture.

Jeremy was born and raised in Tasmania and was heavily influenced by the debates to save Tasmania’s wild rivers and ancient forests. He worked as a sawmiller, fork lift driver and stonemason before entering politics.  Jeremy moved to Orange in the central west of NSW in 1997 and studied and received an Advanced Diploma in Ecological Agriculture and Land Management from the University of Sydney.

He was the first Green elected to Local Government and State Parliament in NSW west of Great Dividing Range.  He was elected to Orange City Council in 2004 and re-elected with an increased vote in 2008. During his time on Orange City Council, he implemented Australia’s first stormwater harvesting project for drinking water supply, campaigned to protect an agricultural research station from developers, constructively engaged with the Aboriginal community and fought to protect water supplies from mining interests. As a Councillor, Jeremy gained a lot of experience dealing with the giant Cadia gold mine, that operates on the outskirts of Orange.  This has included major issues around water use by the mine, the destruction of habitat and biodiversity, and issues around energy use.

He is committed to the engaging with farmers and rural and regional communities. Food security, protecting valuable agricultural soils from mining and coal seam gas, placing the Murray Darling Basin on a sustainable footing, fighting for the infrastructure our regions need and ensuring farmers operate in a fair market are his key policy priorities.

Jeremy lives in the beautiful town of Bellingen on the Mid-North Coast of NSW.

Jeremy ripped up his membership of the NSW Greens in late 2018 saying the party had become rotten and corrupt. He will contest the 2019 NSW state election as an independent real green.
