Metgasco’s ‘cops and courts’ business model is doomed to fail
MEDIA RELEASE - 26 June 2014
The Greens NSW mining spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham welcomed today’s decision by the Office of Coal Seam Gas to maintain the suspension on drilling for unconventional gas at Bentley, near Lismore, and told Metgasco that their business model of relying on cops and courts is doomed to fail and they should pack up and leave the Northern Rivers.
“The Greens welcome this sensible decision from the Office of Coal Seam Gas. Any other decision would have been a huge breach of faith with the Northern Rivers community which has acted in good faith by removing the blockade and the camp,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
“Metgasco has patently failed to earn a social licence and they are now relying on the cops and the courts to be able to drill for gas in a community that has rejected them.
“A business model that relies on cops and courts to force its way into a community is doomed to fail. Metgasco should cut their losses, pack their bags and leave the Northern Rivers.
“The Greens believe that coal seam gas is unsafe, unnecessary and unwanted. The Greens support a rapid transition to clean renewable energy such as wind and solar,” he said.
