Darkinjung case should stop Wallarah 2 coal mine

Wallarah 2 protest

MEDIA RELEASE - 12 June 2014

The Greens NSW mining spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham today welcomed the Land and Environment Court decision which upheld the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council’s rejection of the miners plan to use its site for rail access to transport 5 million tonnes of coal per year for a minimum period of 28 years.

“This result means the Wallarah 2 mine is unviable and the proposal, which was always unwanted by the local community, should be rejected by the Planning Assessment Commission and abandoned by the proponents,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.

“The Liberal Party promised to stop the Wallarah 2 coal mine – ‘no ifs, no buts, a guarantee’ – so it is very disappointing that the Darkinjung people have had to take this court case at all.

“Coal mining is in structural decline as the world begins to transition to clean renewable energy.  NSW does not need any new coal mines, particularly where they threaten the health of the drinking water catchment,” he said.
