Santos CSG should be shut down after another toxic spill is revealed
MEDIA RELEASE -5 June 2014
The Greens NSW mining spokesperson, Jeremy Buckingham, today called for Santos’ coal seam gas licence to be suspended and the project abandoned after it was revealed another leak of toxic waste water had leaked from a storage pond.
“Yet another leak of toxic water demonstrates that coal seam gas is unsafe,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
“The Minister for the Environment, Rob Stokes should tell us just many spills and leaks are acceptable? This project is in its early phase and yet we already have a litany of failures leaving a toxic legacy in the environment.
“The exploration licences should be immediately suspended and the project abandoned before more damage can be done.
“Why is the government fast tracking a coal seam gas project with a terrible record of pollution?
“The Liberal Party should get over its ideological hang up against high-tech clean energy, and move into the 21st Century,” he said.
