O’Farrell has no mandate to take NSW nuclear
15 February 2012
The Greens NSW spokesperson on mining Jeremy Buckingham accused the government of being dishonest with voters by not revealing their plans to open NSW up for uranium mining during the election.
“Nuclear power and uranium mining have always been big political issues in Australia. The Government should have taken this as an explicit policy to the last election and it is dishonest to now seek to open up the state to uranium mining,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
“Minister Hartcher is treating the public like fools if he wants us to believe that exploration for uranium will not lead to mining.
“The Greens are totally opposed to uranium mining. We should be building a clean energy future, not contributing to the highly risky nuclear cycle.
“This move will take NSW one step closer to nuclear reactors for generating power. Given Barry O’Farrell was not honest on uranium mining, how can the public be sure the Liberal Party aren’t angling for nuclear power?”
